During World War II the defence of Gloucestershire was the responsibility of South Midland District and on 1 July 1941 Gloucestershire Sub District was formed with Colonel W. R. STYLES as the Sub-Area Commander, he was later replaced by Colonel K.F.W. Dunn CBE.
